Zadar Facts and Info


If you like to sing, dance and party, Zadar is the place for you. Zadar hosts "Musical Evenings at St. Donat," a summer festival which features baroque, renaissance and medieval musical performances. Zadar hosts many other open-air festivals in the summer, during these festivals expect to find the streets filled with thousands of spectators, many musical groups and makeshift cafes.

If discos, dancing and leisurely evenings are your cup of tea, Zadar is the place to be. Zadar is marked by hundreds of cafes and restaurants of all sizes. If you want to dance at a club with a couple thousand of your closest friends, then go to Disco Saturnus in Zaton (10 minutes North of Zadar) or Club Max in Petrcane. These are without question two of the best dance clubs on the Adriatic. If you prefer something a little more intimate, downtown Zadar has what you're looking for!

The historic core of Zadar is located on a peninsula (approximately 4 km long and 500 m wide), surrounded by the Old Port and the Jazine bay. The new suburbs, Vostarnica and Brodarica, are located mainly along the northeastern coast of the Old Port, outside the peninsula. In the northwestern part of town is the tourist zone with hotels and restaurants (Borik). In the southeast, around the port of Gazenica, a new port-industrial zone is developing.

Many cultural institutions are located in Zadar: Faculty of Arts (1956); Historical Archives (main archives for Dalmatia, 1625), Institute of the HAZU (Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences), numerous museums, the Permanent Exhibition of Sacral Art (1976), Musical Evenings in the Church of St. Donat (initiated in 1961).

Zadar has a busy ferry port with connections to Preko; Dugi Otok; Zaglav; Mali Losinj; Rijeka; Split; Dubrovnik; Ancona, Italy, just to name a few. Zadar's airport is located in Zemunik Donji.
